Handcuffing a One-Armed Bandit

The slot machine as we've experienced it on countless trips to Vegas and as we've seen it a million times on the silver screen could soon be a memory. A slick new technology is coming to town.

First the one-armed bandits lost their arms, replaced by vanilla "push here" buttons that started the spinning of the wheels. Then they removed coins from the equation, converting slots by the thousands to the use of paper account tickets. More...

Girls get extra school help while boys get Ritalin

USA Today -- At last June's graduation at Franklin High School just outside of Milwaukee, three of the four students who tied for valedictorian were girls. Among the National Honor Society members, 76% were girls. And girls comprised 85% of the students on Franklin's 4.0 honor roll.

The superintendent of schools for this upper-middle-class suburb, Gerald Freitag, investigated those numbers after the parents of a boy filed a complaint. He found that the skewed performances by gender at Franklin pretty much mirror the imbalances across the state and the nation. More...

Woodworking shop, restaurant run by All-a-board

Toronto - When he was 15, his parents kicked him out. On the streets, he worked as a prostitute to support his cocaine habit. And he did some jail time, confides the young waiter, staring down at the table top.

It's the lull between lunch and dinner at River, a trendy-looking west-end restaurant with a modern bistro menu, where most of the young workers have known tough times. River is one of three businesses operated by All-a-board, a non-profit program that trains about 50 at-risk youth a year. It began in 1997. More...

Hi Mark

I am sitting in my office listening to you on the radio. So far today I have enjoyed it all. I didn't know you were gay. I don't care if your gay. I can't see how that changes my life. I just enjoy your approach to people who call in to you because your encourage them that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. That is my thought to. I say ''Today is a good day some, are just better than others.'' 'NEXT" Some people can't stand that you have overcome many difficulties in your life to become a person who once again, not only likes himself but contributes so much to others. More...

If we're serious, ban ALL drinking and driving
Headline, Wednesday's Virginian-Pilot: ``DUI changes urged in Va.''
This was accompanied by an A1, above-the-fold story about efforts to get drunken drivers off Virginia's roads.
Who do we think we're kidding? We're not serious about putting an end to drunken driving.
Never have been. More...

Dietary Experts Debate Carbohydrates

(AP) - Should people really care that they digest potatoes faster than carrots?
Macaroni faster than spaghetti? Rice Krispies faster than Special K? A greenish banana faster than a freckled one? A Snickers bar faster than a Twix?
Yes, say some of the country's top-tier nutritional experts. They are convinced that carbohydrates should be labeled good or bad, just the way fats are, and that some of the carbs Americans love most — velvety puddles of mashed potatoes, lighter-than-air white bread — are dietary evil, to be avoided like the nastiest artery-choking trans-fats. Rufus Wainwright Journeys to 'Gay Hell' and Back

"There were a lot of `Boogie Nights' moments, with 20 naked people in my apartment and me in my bathrobe playing `Cigarettes and Chocolate Milk,'" said Rufus Wainwright, describing his social life before a scarifying emotional collapse, a stint in rehab and the completion of his gripping new album, "Want One." VOODOO DRUG ADDICTION RECOVERY

By Mark Elliot

Imagine being addicted to a drug like heroin and trying to find an effective remedy that works fast and keeps you from going back again.

How about Spit- therapy? That’s one where other addicts in treatment spit on you as a punishment for wrong-thinking. Never heard of it?

Well, how about Desert Therapy? As one organization explains it: "providers who are committed to the utilization of outdoor modalities to assist young people and their families to make positive change."

Never mind that it’s for 21 days where nothing is done to address the issues of addiction, except to place the addict somewhere not listed in the Zip Code Directory…Sound good?
