Binge drinking among college
students is alarming. In Connecticut, the practice is epidemic. More
than half of Connecticut college students engaged in binge drinking -
defined as four drinks within an hour for females and five for males -
in the two weeks prior to a recent survey. The national average is 42
percent.
It's hard to understand why young people on the brink of their adult
promise would choose to sabotage their health and academic success
with such stupid behavior. But they do, and so it becomes everyone's
problem. Binge drinking leads to vandalism, rape, assault, accidents
and sometimes death.

UK Cannabis laws eased in drug policy shakeup
|
Britain's 30-year-old cannabis laws, the most
stringent in Europe, are to be relaxed by next spring under plans announced
yesterday by the home secretary, David Blunkett.
Cannabis - which is tried by more than 40% of British schoolchildren - is to be
downgraded from a class B to a class C drug. The police will lose the power to
arrest the 90,000 people a year who are currently charged with possession
offences.

Beware Ecstasy
WEDNESDAY, Oct. 24 (HealthScoutNews) -- You may want to
add liver failure to the list of dangers tied to the club drug
ecstasy.
A new report from doctors at the University of Nebraska
Medical Center found that ecstasy caused profound liver damage
in a young woman who eventually died. Although the woman
claimed she had only taken half a tablet of the club drug, her
body reacted drastically, the researchers say.
