'A joint in other hand': Joking about trying marijuana not funny, John Walters says

WASHINGTON - The White House's drug czar lashed out yesterday at Jean Chrétien for relaxing marijuana laws and said Canadians are "ashamed" at the Prime Minister's recent jokes about smoking pot when he retires.

John Walters, director of National Drug Control Policy Office, said Mr. Chrétien was being irresponsible when he said last week that he might try marijuana when he leaves office next February.

Canadians "are concerned about the behaviour of their Prime Minister, joking that he is going to use marijuana in his retirement," Mr. Walters told the Center for Strategic and International Studies in Washington.

Radio commentator Rush Limbaugh says he will enter rehab for an addiction to prescription pain pills.

New York -- Limbaugh confirms addiction

Conservative broadcaster Rush Limbaugh told his stunned listeners Friday that he is addicted to prescription painkillers and is checking himself into a rehabilitation clinic ``to once and for all break the hold this highly addictive medication has on me.''

Limbaugh said his addiction began ''five or six'' years ago and that he has twice before checked himself into drug treatment centers without success.

His disappearence into a drug rehabilitation center will silence, at least temporarily, one of the most popular broadcasters in America -- Limbaugh's show airs to an estimated 20 million listeners over more than 600 stations -- as well as one of its most influential conservative political voices. Being a victim of sexual abuse makes for good conversation these days, but I cannot say I enjoy the topic. Sexual abuse is a very familiar topic for those of us involved in alcohol and drug recovery. I have heard estimates that 60 percent to 80 per cent of us have been sexually abused. When I first began discussing it publicly in 1991 a secretary asked me if such talk was "some new fad for young men". I think the look she got from me told her what she needed to know.

It is no fad. I would prefer to have my nails pulled out with a pair of pliers - slowly and with agony if it would mean never having to discuss my sexual abuse again. It is a subject that’s caused me no end of pain, confusion, alcoholism, and addiction since I was six years old. Other victims are suing the church, the parochial schools, the government, and others for their suffering. I have no one to sue and no desire to do it even if I could. More...
