Ottawa backs off pot law plans
Possession to stay criminal offence
Changes come after U.S. outcry

OTTAWA— The federal government has backed off plans to make pot possession a mere ticketing offence, the Star has learned.
Instead, sources say the Liberal government will keep simple possession of marijuana on the books as a criminal offence under the Controlled Drugs and Substances Act.

Parents: Quit Smoking Before Your Child Turns 8

NEW YORK (Reuters Health) - New research suggests that, for parents, quitting smoking before children turn eight or nine appears to steer them away from becoming teenagers who smoke.

U.S. researchers discovered that children of parents who quit smoking before the youngsters entered third grade were 39 percent less likely to be smokers themselves at age 17 or 18 than children whose parents never butted out for good.

An Anorexic's Story
By Amanda Gardner
From HealthScoutNews
When Jenny "Hendricks" was 14, she offered to keep her mother company on a diet for Lent. When Lent ended, Jenny just kept on dieting.

The illness came on with alarming speed. The 5-foot-tall Denver teenager ate only lettuce and cottage cheese and drank only diet soda. Her weight plummeted from 90 pounds. She lost interest in her beloved horse and withdrew from other activities. Within two months, she was hospitalized for the first time, and she began a diary, in which she wrote:

"Today I weighed 79-3/8 [pounds]. What a pig." More...

PH.D. TAKES FALL TO ADDICTION

SAN FRANCISCO - Isaac sleeps in his closet, in a corner carved out from all the dirty clothing on the floor of his Tenderloin apartment.

That's a long way from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, which awarded him a dual doctoral degree in architecture and media arts and sciences a decade ago.

He is now 47 and addicted to crystal methamphetamine, an unusually powerful form of what's commonly known as speed. He suffers from depression and has been hospitalized for speed-induced psychosis. He has had surgeries on his hands for abscesses that he developed from injecting the drug. When he's not too depressed to have sex, he logs on to the Internet and arranges to meet a sex partner -- all faster than he can get his takeout delivered. More...

NO PARTIES PLEASE
A Subdued "Happy Birthday" To Methadone

By Mark Elliot

November 4, 2002 - What would happen if we won the war on drugs?

What if we could deal successfully with the problems of addiction with treatment and see the tangible evidence of success in lower crime rates?

We only need to look at Washington D.C. in 1972 to have a sense of might have been. You wouldn’t necessarily connect Richard Nixon and drug-legalization, but the biggest advance in drug treatment, the legalization of the opiate drug, methadone, for use as a "maintenance medicine" in treating heroin addiction, began during his term of office.
