By JOHN LELAND

THERE'S the thumping, utopian music; the hordes of bliss-seeking baby boomers; the drug that enriches all experience. The sex. It could be the Autumn of Love, made possible by a corporate sponsor and a prescription. (Free Registration Req'd) More...

The Alchemy of OxyContin: From Pain Relief to Drug Addiction

By PAUL TOUGH
The New York Times
Paula is taking me on a driving tour of Man, the tiny West Virginia town where she has spent her entire life. Because I don't know my way around the hollows and gullies and creeks that carve through these hills, Paula is at the wheel. And because Paula isn't a morning person, we've set out on our tour at midnight. It's dark; the only illumination comes from our headlights cutting through the mist that rolls down from the hills.

Little-known drug, GHB, killing teens, adults

A life cut short on the cusp of adulthood is heart-breaking, especially when death could have been prevented.

As friends sprinkled the ashes of 18-year-old Chase Taylor on the Atlantic Ocean earlier this week, they tried to understand how he died. The rest of us are left to grapple with yet another drug that could claim the lives of our children in an unguarded or careless moment.

My name is George, and I'm an alcoholic

Nearing the 15th anniversary of the president's sobriety, a fellow ex-drinker tells what he sees when he looks at George W. Bush.

By Cary Tennis/Salon.com| Among those of us who have drunk too much and quit, there is a bond like that among soldiers or mothers or anyone who has been forced by the passion for survival to face elemental truths. We recognize each other by the habits we acquired in the trenches and on the road home: the way a soldier lights a cigarette, the way a mother ties a child's shoe, the way a reformed drunk pauses before speaking, to let the bad thoughts pass in silence.

Tobacco giant seeks retrial of $3 billion verdict, says smoker's criminal past relevant

LOS ANGELES (AP) - Philip Morris Co. is arguing that the $3 billion US judgment awarded to a longtime smoker with lung cancer should be reversed because the judge refused to allow evidence of his criminal history.

A Superior Court jury last month awarded $3 billion in punitive damages and $5.5 million in compensatory damages to Richard Boeken, 56. The verdict was the largest ever in an individual lawsuit against a tobacco company. More...

Activist Butts In on Londoners
Britain: UC San Francisco professor urges city panel to adopt smoking curbs.

By LAUREL ROSEN, The Los Angeles TIMES

LONDON -- Waking up reeking of cigarette smoke after a night out on the town may be a thing of the past for Californians. But smoking remains an integral part of Britain's pub culture--and it's allowed just about everywhere else.

Perhaps not for long, if a determined UC San Francisco professor has anything to do with it.

Choose your poison
Who uses drugs, and why
From The Economist print edition

MOST drug users live in the poor world, not the rich. Countries such as China and Pakistan in the case of heroin, and Colombia (South America's second most populous country) in the case of cocaine, have local traditions of drug use and vast uprooted urban populations to provide expanding markets. In future, growth will be concentrated in developing countries and the former Soviet Union.

Bill finally got sober. After years of heavy, progressive drinking, he received treatment and had been faithfully attending a Twelve Step Program. Bill loved his recovery! He began to understand his illness, obtained a sponsor, worked the Steps and went to all kinds of meetings. The one thing that really baffled him was why his wife still seemed to hate him so much.
