Reefer Madness
By BILL KELLER
The New York Times

We interrupt our coverage of the war on terrorism to check in with that other permanent conflict against a stateless enemy, the war on drugs. To judge by the glee at the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy, the drug warriors have just accomplished the moral equivalent of routing the Taliban — helping to halt a relentless jihad against the nation's drug laws. Hello Mark:
I am a "graduate" of the Moreland Centre 4 years ago. I credit the staff of that facility with saving my life.
Needless to say, I'm saddened that this program will not be able to do the same for other people in addictions. More...

The fascination of fat
CHRISTOPHER HUTSUL
The Toronto Star
TORONTO -The doctor peers into a monitor, watching a video X-ray of a human heart.

Blood flows through the knotted vessels, then hits a throbbing snag — a clogged artery.

Dr. Michael Bentley-Taylor has stared into thousands of plugged hearts in the cardio cathlab at Toronto East General Hospital. But this one is particularly bad. More...

Poll: 6 in 10 Would Like to Lose Weight

(AP) - People who feel a little guilty digging into those holiday meals can take comfort in the knowledge that they're not alone.

Almost six in 10 Americans say they would like to lose weight, according to a Gallup poll released on the eve of Thanksgiving, a day that makes significant contributions to Americans' weight. Two-thirds of women felt that way, while half of men did. More...

Pot farms cost you $34 a year
Hydro-sucking marijuana operations have stolen at least $5.5 million this year
HAMILTON - Hydro theft by criminal pot growers will add about $34 to your electricity bill this year.

That's what it will take to cover the roughly $5.5 million in power the city utility estimates it will lose this year to grow operations.

It will recover some of that money -- maybe as much as $1 million this year -- which would knock the per customer cost down to $28 or so. But it won't stay at that level for long.

Despite the best efforts of police and hydro investigators, the number of indoor marijuana operations looks like it's going to keep growing. More...

Drugged Driving Hopes

Federal officials announced a new effort to target motorists driving under the influence of illegal drugs. This may sound like a good idea to some, but it's half-baked with a bizarre twist -- the feds have paid researchers to test "drugged drivers" in real traffic. More...

NO PARTIES PLEASE
A Subdued "Happy Birthday" To Methadone

By Mark Elliot

November 4, 2002 - What would happen if we won the war on drugs?

What if we could deal successfully with the problems of addiction with treatment and see the tangible evidence of success in lower crime rates?

We only need to look at Washington D.C. in 1972 to have a sense of might have been. You wouldn’t necessarily connect Richard Nixon and drug-legalization, but the biggest advance in drug treatment, the legalization of the opiate drug, methadone, for use as a "maintenance medicine" in treating heroin addiction, began during his term of office.
