Chrétien blasts his MPs for meddling with pot bill

NORTH BAY, ONT. -- Prime Minister Jean Chrétien took a whack at a group of his own MPs yesterday, accusing them of asking the United States to "intervene" to block their own government's plans to decriminalize marijuana.

The MPs met with a senior U.S. drug policy official in July, and a Canadian Foreign Affairs official present reported they suggested the United States press its objection to the marijuana policy, tying it to trade and border disputes. More...

500 mourn teen victim of horrific crash
Hit by car Saturday near Ste. Adèle club

Sobbing their way through a popular rock tune that Nicolas Fortin used to serenade them with on his guitar, family and friends bade a final adieu to the 18-year-old yesterday.

About 500 people packed the 149-year-old St. Sauveur Church for the Roman Catholic funeral to pay their respects to the well-loved Fortin, killed after being struck by a car on Saturday. More...

Who's Holding the Aces Now?

Rob McGarvey is, in the lingo of the blackjack world, an advantage player. A card counter. To maximize his take, he keeps track of the cards as they're dealt, and tailors his bets based on the cards his system predicts will hit the felt next.

Card counting, of course, is nothing new. Math professor Ed Thorp scorched Vegas with his groundbreaking 1962 book, Beat the Dealer, that detailed winning card-counting strategies. It's been a pitched battle ever since, with counters and casinos each developing new systems to stay one step ahead of the other. More...

Hi Mark

I am sitting in my office listening to you on the radio. So far today I have enjoyed it all. I didn't know you were gay. I don't care if your gay. I can't see how that changes my life. I just enjoy your approach to people who call in to you because your encourage them that there is a light at the end of the tunnel. That is my thought to. I say ''Today is a good day some, are just better than others.'' 'NEXT" Some people can't stand that you have overcome many difficulties in your life to become a person who once again, not only likes himself but contributes so much to others. More...

Enforce youth gambling laws, experts urge

Montreal - If laws were enforced, fewer young Quebecers would face the crippling prospect of becoming pathological gamblers, experts said yesterday in the wake of another study chronicling the spread of youth gambling.

"Most of the kids tell us they have been sneaking into (Quebec) casinos since they were 15 or 16 years of age," Jeffrey Derevensky of McGill University's international centre on youth gambling said yesterday. More...

Severe Attention Disorder Linked with Drug Abuse

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - Children with attention deficit/hyperactivity disorder are more likely to smoke, drink and use illegal drugs, U.S. researchers reported on Sunday.

It could be because children with the disorder -- called ADHD -- have trouble paying attention, have problems at school and difficulty with relationships with friends and family. This, in turn, could make them susceptible to abusing drugs and alcohol, the researchers said.

It also shows it is important to diagnose and treat ADHD early, the researchers write in the August issue of the Journal of Abnormal Psychology.

Greece to fine, jail bawdy Britons for beach binges

Greek authorities, who say they have suffered too much of British brawling, booze and bawdyism, have started imposing heavy fines and jail sentences in a bid to stop the rowdy tourists.

Officials were particularly outraged after a recent oral sex competition was held at a beach party on the Greek island of Corfu. More...

VOODOO DRUG ADDICTION RECOVERY

By Mark Elliot

Imagine being addicted to a drug like heroin and trying to find an effective remedy that works fast and keeps you from going back again.

How about Spit- therapy? That’s one where other addicts in treatment spit on you as a punishment for wrong-thinking. Never heard of it?

Well, how about Desert Therapy? As one organization explains it: "providers who are committed to the utilization of outdoor modalities to assist young people and their families to make positive change."

Never mind that it’s for 21 days where nothing is done to address the issues of addiction, except to place the addict somewhere not listed in the Zip Code Directory…Sound good?
