Casinos adopting face-scan systems

WINNIPEG -- Prodded by recent legal action against casinos for failing to keep out gambling addicts, casino owners across Canada are starting to buy facial-recognition systems that will photograph patrons and automatically identify unwelcome guests.

"It's a huge revolution," said Maurits Vander Cruyssen, a casino security consultant and an avid booster of the technology.

Subject: Any Suggestions?

Dear Mr. Elliot,

My parents are frequent listeners of your show on CFRB and are aware of your ability to reach people who feel they are beyond hope. I am writing in hope of gaining some suggestions from you, to help my family (this includes myself) deal with my younger brother's addiction problems, as well as ways to help my brother. I am trying to write this objectively, but I know it's going to sound judgmental.

Here is some background information: More...

Prime Numbers: What Science and Crime Have in Common
When Julius Caesar was touring the Spanish city of Cadiz in his early 30's, the ancient Roman biographer Suetonius reports, he came across a statue of Alexander the Great and wept beside it. Alexander at the same age had conquered the known world, while Caesar was just a minor Roman official, a source of severe chagrin to the ambitious future autocrat. (Free Registration Req'd) More...

Why go public with my story?
Part of the answer lies in the boring truth about losing weight

June Thompson wants to get fit and lose 100 pounds along the way. She has enlisted the help of a personal trainer and a nutritionist and she is sharing her story with Gazette readers every other week for a year.

I'm on vacation for a few weeks. Traditionally vacations have included overindulgence in some shape or form, but I wanted to stay focused on my program.

That's why I thought I would answer some frequently asked questions (FAQs) for my next couple of columns. Easy and stress-free. And I can concentrate on not diving head-first into the Haagen Daz!

Without a doubt, the most frequently asked question is: Why did you agree to do this so publicly? More...

Drug touted as teacher's helper
Concerta is alternative to Ritalin. But critics say it's just another excuse to avoid dealing with unruly students

MONTREAL — A newly approved drug will take the medication to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder out of the principal's office, a Montreal child psychiatrist says.

Diane Sauriol said the drug Concerta - to be made available in Canada this month - is effective for 12 hours, unlike the current ADHD medication Ritalin, which lasts up to about half that time. Concerta was recently approved by Health Canada.

The longer-lasting drug is being touted as a way of alleviating what some principals have called the "hospitalization of schools."

VOODOO DRUG ADDICTION RECOVERY

By Mark Elliot

Imagine being addicted to a drug like heroin and trying to find an effective remedy that works fast and keeps you from going back again.

How about Spit- therapy? That’s one where other addicts in treatment spit on you as a punishment for wrong-thinking. Never heard of it?

Well, how about Desert Therapy? As one organization explains it: "providers who are committed to the utilization of outdoor modalities to assist young people and their families to make positive change."

Never mind that it’s for 21 days where nothing is done to address the issues of addiction, except to place the addict somewhere not listed in the Zip Code Directory…Sound good?
