"It reeled me hook, line and sinker," the 37-year-old mother of two said this week. "Until that point, I was a recreational gambler. Then I became addicted and it ruined my life." More...

I have listened to you when I can (now you are on too late at night for me, but I am sure you have a large listening audience anyway. There is no better person to help people in stress than someone who has walked that painful path as you never cease to remind us. I think you one of the most courageous men I know - as every show you bare your soul and that can hurt. A dear, late addict did what you do, in Guilford, England.  More...

Prime Numbers: What Science and Crime Have in Common
When Julius Caesar was touring the Spanish city of Cadiz in his early 30's, the ancient Roman biographer Suetonius reports, he came across a statue of Alexander the Great and wept beside it. Alexander at the same age had conquered the known world, while Caesar was just a minor Roman official, a source of severe chagrin to the ambitious future autocrat. (Free Registration Req'd) More...

With Injection Sites, Canadian Drug Policy Seeks a Fix

VANCOUVER, B.C. -- Her fingers travel up and down her arm, feeling for a good vein. Lori-Kim Veenstra opens a $7 bag of methamphetamine and pours some of the crystals onto a clean spoon. She opens a tiny blue bottle of sterile water and fills the spoon, waiting for the chemical to dissolve. Sometimes junkies use water from puddles to break down their drugs, sometimes soda pop or toilet water. Sometimes they use their own blood.
Not here. Veenstra, 40, is in a clinic at the Dr. Peter Centre, where junkies who test positive for HIV can shoot up safely under supervision. This is one of the first of what are called "safe injection sites" in North America. More...

Drug touted as teacher's helper
Concerta is alternative to Ritalin. But critics say it's just another excuse to avoid dealing with unruly students

MONTREAL — A newly approved drug will take the medication to treat Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder out of the principal's office, a Montreal child psychiatrist says.

Diane Sauriol said the drug Concerta - to be made available in Canada this month - is effective for 12 hours, unlike the current ADHD medication Ritalin, which lasts up to about half that time. Concerta was recently approved by Health Canada.

The longer-lasting drug is being touted as a way of alleviating what some principals have called the "hospitalization of schools."

ADDICTION, FEAR AND PRAYER

By Mark Elliot

I always had a fear of being caught on my knees praying. I’ll let you in on a not so shameful secret too: I do it. And I’m now admitting it publicly. So, what’s this fear about?

Fear is the essence of addiction; that’s why I used drugs. In the beginning, it was a way to overcome the fear and keep functioning with a reasonable level of comfort in situations where I was afraid the fear would paralyze me.

Although I had a phobia of actually being seen "praying," I did other things which were shameless in doing drugs. For instance, I’d have no fear of being with people and snorting drugs through a rolled up dollar bill! Choking on a joint or throwing up on the street after drinking too much was "acceptable behavior." However, being seen on my knees speaking to an invisible "Higher Power" was weird!
