A gambler's rehab gone horribly wrong

Fruit machine

Winning $6,000 playing the slots at an Ontario casino was the worst thing that ever happened to Lisa Dickert.

"It reeled me hook, line and sinker," the 37-year-old mother of two said this week. "Until that point, I was a recreational gambler. Then I became addicted and it ruined my life." More...

'Crack' nicotine in cigarettes varies widely

Some cigarettes have a "kick" containing 35 times more "freebase" nicotine - the most addictive form - than others, researchers have found. The findings could help rate the addictiveness of different brands, they say.

"Free-base" nicotine is a particularly potent form of the naturally-occurring tobacco drug because it is in an extremely volatile, uncombined form. This means it can be much more rapidly absorbed by the lungs and brain than nicotine derivatives such as nornicotine or its salts.

I have listened to you when I can (now you are on too late at night for me, but I am sure you have a large listening audience anyway. There is no better person to help people in stress than someone who has walked that painful path as you never cease to remind us. I think you one of the most courageous men I know - as every show you bare your soul and that can hurt. A dear, late addict did what you do, in Guilford, England.  More...

Prime Numbers: What Science and Crime Have in Common
When Julius Caesar was touring the Spanish city of Cadiz in his early 30's, the ancient Roman biographer Suetonius reports, he came across a statue of Alexander the Great and wept beside it. Alexander at the same age had conquered the known world, while Caesar was just a minor Roman official, a source of severe chagrin to the ambitious future autocrat. (Free Registration Req'd) More...

Man didn't know he was on drugs, judge rules

WATERLOO (CP) — A man who drove while naked and high on drugs, slamming into several cars and seriously injuring two people, did not knowingly take ecstasy, a judge ruled today.

In acquitting Clifford Harvey of dangerous driving causing bodily harm, Justice Donald Gordon pointed the finger at the man's two friends, who may have slipped him the drug, or know who did.

He suggested they know why Harvey ended up so intoxicated on Feb. 28, 2001, that he removed his clothes and tried to have sex with the road and a car before causing the horrific accident.

ADDICTION, FEAR AND PRAYER

By Mark Elliot

I always had a fear of being caught on my knees praying. I’ll let you in on a not so shameful secret too: I do it. And I’m now admitting it publicly. So, what’s this fear about?

Fear is the essence of addiction; that’s why I used drugs. In the beginning, it was a way to overcome the fear and keep functioning with a reasonable level of comfort in situations where I was afraid the fear would paralyze me.

Although I had a phobia of actually being seen "praying," I did other things which were shameless in doing drugs. For instance, I’d have no fear of being with people and snorting drugs through a rolled up dollar bill! Choking on a joint or throwing up on the street after drinking too much was "acceptable behavior." However, being seen on my knees speaking to an invisible "Higher Power" was weird!
