Police infiltration angers recovery groups
Spying officers scare people away, they fear

TORONTO — News that police infiltrated Narcotics Anonymous meetings has left recovering addicts angry and afraid, counsellors say.
"Revelations of this kind of police behaviour will scare people out of Alcoholics Anonymous, Narcotics Anonymous and related organizations, and will more than likely result in some of them losing their battles with addiction," Peter Armstrong said yesterday after The Star reported that a Toronto undercover police officer infiltrated a Narcotics Anonymous group in Peterborough. Armstrong is president of Renascent, a Toronto-based alcoholic and drug recovery organization. More...

Six women allegedly murdered led lives of desperation and disappointment

VANCOUVER (CP) - Dozens and dozens of female faces - mostly unflattering, vacant visages - stare from mug-shot style newspaper photos. Spartan descriptions underneath contain the barest of distressing statistics: name, birthdate, date last seen, date reported missing. More...

Rooms of trust where the police don't belong

UNDERCOVER police officer Maja Schlegel won an award for her work infiltrating a Narcotics Anonymous group in Peterborough, but she's done more damage than she knows.
Her role in the investigation of a mother in the unsolved slaying of her 21-month-old daughter was a dreadful misjudgment that undermines fellowships forming the single biggest success in the battle against addiction and may well cost lives. More...

So you don't think the police should be sniffing around. And poor Brenda Waudby. What a laugh. These people that get themselves hooked because they're just so helpless.... and just get themselves into such messes. And then they think they can easily go and get some support. Some friendly people around them to hear their sad tale of woe..... my my my look what i did to myself.... and my my my my little girl is dead . someone murdered her. and i wasn't even there. my my my. The sound of this woman on the radio on Saturday was pathetic.

Young Pot Smokers More Likely To Try Hallucinogens

A new study provides the first epidemiological evidence that young marijuana smokers are substantially more likely than non-smokers to be presented with the opportunity to try hallucinogens.
The study was performed by researchers from the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health.
Once the opportunity for hallucinogen use occurs, marijuana smokers are more likely than non-smokers to actually try it. The study appears in the April issue of Drug and Alcohol Dependence. More...

DO I NEED THESE GAS ATTACKS TRIGGERED BY THE PHARMACEUTICAL INDUSTRY?

NO, AND I WON’T BUY THEIR GAS-REDUCTION PRODUCTS

By Nicholas Regush

Look, I’ll confess, the drug companies give me gas. The research they buy and the doctors they control are so shamelessly the antithesis of science that they should give any scientifically-oriented soul one bout of gas after another. So anyone out there who is a Real scientist, or interested in Real science, fess up. Tell it like it is about the gas attacks.  More...

AN OUTRAGEOUS POLICE INVASION OF AN ADDICTION RECOVERY PROGRAM: WHAT NEXT?

By Mark Elliot

Should the police be allowed to wire a church to gather evidence in a criminal case? A good Christian thinks of the confessional as being sacrosanct, a place where you can openly discuss your crimes and receive absolution - privileged information that can’t be used in court. But, think about this: we could save so much money on investigations by putting microphones in and taping the secrets of these losers. After all, they are criminals and we don't need to care what happens to them. So what if a few innocent people get caught and have to suffer?

If this makes sense then you won't mind a few other similar tactics: Allowing the police to trap unsuspecting addicts at recovery meetings. It’s said at almost every meeting - What you see here, when you leave here, let it stay here - but that's only for the real addicts, not good police officers. No one checks you at the door for hidden tape recorders or runs security checks to make sure you aren't a police officer. Everyone is trusted to be as honest as they can be. So what if a junkie gets caught confessing to something illegal? If you find yourself agreeing to any of the above statements you could become an exemplary member of the Toronto Police Force.
